Q&A about Life in Tokyo

Q: How much is the average rent?

A:  For a 6畳 (10㎡) room which includes a bath, toilet, and a kitchen, the rent will be 80,000 - 90,000 yen. At the time when one signs the contract, in many cases courtesy money worth 2 months rent(reikin 礼金) as well as deposit money (shikikin 敷金)also worth 2 months rent has to be paid, so it is wise to prepare 5 - 6 months rent in advance.


Q: What is reikin and shikikin?

A: Reikin is deposit money paid at the time of making the contract. It is non- refundable. Shikikin is security deposit money and will be used to cover any expenses needed for repair. The balance of shikikin will be refunded when the contract is over.


Q: Do I need a guarantor when I rent an apartment ?

A: Yes, you do. The school can be your guarantor while you are a student of JET. If JET serves as a guarantor, you are required to pay a month’s rent equivalence to JET, but this will be refunded later. There are cases where warrantee money (hoshokin 保証金) equivalent to 1 months rent is required, separate from the deposit money.


Q: How much are the average food expenses?

A: If you cook for yourself, 40,000 - 60,000 yen would be need to cover food expenses. If you eat out, you will need at least 600 yen per meal.


Q: How much will all other expenses add up to?

A: 5,000 - 10,000 yen for transportation. 5,000 - 10,000 yen for water, electricity, and gas bills. In addition to these basic expenses, allow 20,000 - 30,000 yen for odd expenses. So, apart from school fees, total living cost will be approximately 110,000 - 130,000 yen per month.


Q: Are part-time jobs available?

A: You should not rely too much on part-time job income, but students of JET Academy are allowed to work after 3 months have passed from the time of entry into Japan. Working hours must not exceed 28 hours a week. You are not allowed to work at places for entertainment and amusement such as bars and pachinko parlors


Q: What are some of the common part-time jobs?

A: Waiting on tables or washing dishes in a restaurant, or cleaning office buildings. The average rate of payment is 900 yen per hour.


Q: What about sickness and injury?

A: All students are recommended to take out a health insurance policy. In cases where students join National Health Insurance scheme, they pay only thirty percent of the medical expenses.

Apart from the above, all students must pay an additional 2,000 yen per year (or 200 yen per month) for insurance to cover accidents at school and for accidents which occur on the way to or from school.

Q: What about earthquakes?

A: The School building of JET Academy is reinforced concrete in earthquake-resistant structure. There was no damage to the building and our school dormitory even when the big earthquake happened on 11 March, 2011.  We hold fire drills regularly and all the students have to take part in and learn how to act in times of emergency.
