In 1959, I set my foot on Japan for the first time as a student. Since then, I have studied, worked and have made many friends. It is my earnest desire at this point in my life to tell young people all over the world what I have experienced.

The Japanese language, rich in its cultural background and at the same time, fit for studies in the latest technology, has many dimensions. Though studying Japanese language and living in Japanese society, hope every one of you will come to know the kindness, diligence, and sensitivity of the Japanese people. I dedicate myself to educating young people, believing that you will learn and take home with you the law-abiding spirit. To live according to the rules is the basis for a stable society.

To prospective students who wish to study in Japan

Studying abroad is a wonderful experience.

I cannot guarantee that all experiences are pleasant and delightful. In fact, many of them might be difficult or unpleasant or both.  But I do believe that, when you look back on them later in life, each and every incident you encounter here will prove to be invaluable and indispensable, and that you will not regret what you have learned during your study abroad.

I myself had an unforgettable experience of studying in Germany when I was younger.  It gave me a chance to reassess myself and my country in a totally different environment from the one I had grown up in.

I wish to pass on my wonderful experience to all the students who are planning to come to Japan now.  I received great support from German friends during my stay there, and I deeply feel that it is my mission that I repay their hospitality through helping foreign students at JET Academy.

Let me recommend to all students who will study at the Academy that you enjoy your stay in Japan so that you can achieve better in your primary goal of studying Japanese.  The teachers and the staff at JET Academy pledge that we will do our best to make your study a successful and fruitful experience which you will never regret.

■ What is JET Academy?

JET Academy was established in 1988 as an educational institution (学校法人) chartered by the Governor of Tokyo.  Since its foundation, the main purpose of the school has been to supervise students who wish to enter universities in Japan.  The effort has borne fruit---in plenty.

As a recognition of its achievement, the Ministry of Education (now the Ministry of Education and Science) appointed the Academy as a ‘PreparatorySchool’, in 2000.

We have accepted 50 Thailand students on government scholarship since 2004.

■ JET Academy Q&A

――What is a Preparatory School?

Applicants who want to enter a Japanese university are required to have completed twelve years of formal education.  Whereas students from Taiwan or Korea, for instance, have no problem in this regard, those from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Turkey, Russia and several other countries, including South American nations, have received only eleven years of education at the time of graduation from high school.  The title of ‘Preparatory School’ has been established to remedy the latter case: students who have successfully finished a Ministry-approved course are regarded to have completed the required twelve years and are eligible to sit for entrance examinations held by colleges and universities.

The two courses offered at JET, College Preparatory Course A (1 year / starting in April) and College Preparatory Course B (1.5-year / starting in October), are certified by the Ministry of Education and Science as ‘Preparatory Courses’.

――What is a College Preparatory Course at the JET Academy?

The objective of these courses is to ensure students to pass entrance examinations of national universities and/or prestigious private universities, as well as to pass Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU).

In addition to Japanese language courses, English and Mathematics classes are offered where necessary, so that students are better prepared for various entrance examination requirements.

Guidance on choice of universities, instruction on essay-writing and interview practices are also provided as well as guidance on filling in necessary application forms.

――Is there a course for students who do not wish to enter a university?

Yes, there is Japanese Course. Students may want to enter a vocational college or may want simply to improve their Japanese language abilities.  We have various Japanese courses at different levels for such students. In addition, we provide many events to meet with Japanese university students and Japanese families. Students have the opportunity to use Japanese and combine student-oriented lessons with out-of-the-school activities that are effective for beginning as well as advanced students.

――Are there any short-term, intensive courses?

Yes, short-term programs are available any time of the year, provided that there is a suitable class open at the time of enrolment.  In cases where no such class is available, we recommend private lessons.

――Is there any scholarship I can get from the school?

Yes, there is. Some scholarships are awarded to selected students with excellent grade and attendance each year. For example, scholarship from the Ministry of Education and Science, Takayama International Education Foundation and so on.

JET has many moral/financial supporters ― alumni and friendly organizations, which offer generous scholarships to students with excellent grades so they can devote their time in full to study.

――What about school dormitory?

We provide school dormitory with top facilities and easy access to the school.  Total capacity is 14 students.  All necessary furniture and electrical appliances are equipped so that you can start your life in Tokyo comfortably from the day you arrive in Japan.

――Is there any student-discount?

Full-time students can purchase commuter passes for JR, private railways and buses at a student discount rate. In addition, students are eligible for a 20% discount for trips of more than 100km one-way on JR.  It is also possible to buy a student-discount ticket at a museum, theater and so on.
