In 1959, I set my foot on Japan for the first time as a student. Since then, I have studied, worked and have made many friends. It is my earnest desire at this point in my life to tell young people all over the world what I have experienced.

The Japanese language, rich in its cultural background and at the same time, fit for studies in the latest technology, has many dimensions. Though studying Japanese language and living in Japanese society, hope every one of you will come to know the kindness, diligence, and sensitivity of the Japanese people. I dedicate myself to educating young people, believing that you will learn and take home with you the law-abiding spirit. To live according to the rules is the basis for a stable society.

To prospective students who wish to study in Japan

In this era of advanced internet and technology, some question the purpose of studying foreign languages or even studying abroad. However, I have met over 3000 students in my 20 years of teaching, many have expressed that there is meaning in studying abroad and you can get invaluable experience from it. Studying abroad is where one stands on their own feet in a foreign country, and at the same time struggling to communicate in foreign language, which could be a tough experience for students. Yet, every single one of these experiences will become an irreplaceable part in our life.

Our academy has a long history and was founded in 1988. Our academy was created by the efforts of each teacher and student that held high ambition, and have been mutually enhancing one another up until today. Even from now on, we are still aiming to become an even better academy than before.

There is a motto, “the heavens will help those who help themselves which we display in our classroom. Happiness and blessing will fall upon those who learn autonomously and strive hard for themself. To everyone who studies abroad in Japan, please try your best to master your Japanese ability until it is second to none. From the bottom of my heart I hope that through studying abroad in Japan, you will be able to grow in every aspect and enrich your lives here..

■ What is JET Academy?

JET Academy was established in 1988 as an educational institution (学校法人) chartered by the Governor of Tokyo. Since its foundation, the main purpose of the school has been to supervise students who wish to enter universities in Japan. The effort has borne fruit---in plenty.
You are able to effectively achieve learning outcome during a short period of time since all courses consist of full-time curricula. Recently, we have been making efforts also on job guidance in Japan.

As a recognition of its achievement, the Ministry of Education (now the Ministry of Education and Science) appointed the Academy as a ‘PreparatorySchool’, in 2000.

We have accepted over 60 Thailand students on government scholarship since 2004.

■ JET Academy Q&A

――What is a Preparatory School?

Applicants who want to enter a Japanese university are required to have completed twelve years of formal education.
Since students can graduate high school only in 10 or 11 years in some countries, they cannot enter further education in Japan due to Japanese system.
The title of ‘Preparatory School’ has been established to remedy the latter case: students who have successfully finished a Ministry-approved course are regarded to have completed the required twelve years and are eligible to sit for entrance examinations held by colleges and universities.

The two courses offered at JET, College Preparatory Course A (1 year / starting in April) and College Preparatory Course B (1.5-year / starting in October), are certified by the Ministry of Education and Science as ‘Preparatory Courses’.

――What is a College Preparatory Course at the JET Academy?

The objective of these courses is to ensure students to pass entrance examinations of national universities and/or prestigious private universities, as well as to pass Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU).

In addition to Japanese language courses, English and Mathematics, Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) classes are offered where necessary, so that students are better prepared for various entrance examination requirements.

Guidance on choice of universities, instruction on essay-writing and interview practices are also provided as well as guidance on filling in necessary application forms.

――Is there a course for students who looks forward to working in Japan?

Japanese course 日本語基礎科 ( 1 year ) is designed for these category of students. In this course, you are able to choose and take up recruit seminar and business Japanese class.
On top of that, we have various Japanese courses at different levels for such students. In addition, we provide many events to meet with Japanese university students and Japanese families. Students have the opportunity to use Japanese and combine student-oriented lessons with out-of-the-school activities that are effective for beginning as well as advanced students.
(This course is also recommended for students who wish to enter Vocational colleges (専門学校). This course prepares students for the JLPT N1 and N2 levels, whilst balancing between reading comprehension, writing and communication skills.)

――Are there any short-term, intensive courses?

Yes, short-term programs are available any time of the year, provided that there is a suitable class open at the time of enrolment. We also provide conversation course in summer (August-September) and one on one private lesson.

――Are there any scholarships I can apply for by the school?

Yes, there are. Various scholarships are awarded to selected students with excellent grades and attendance each year. The scholarships by the Ministry of Education and Science (MEXT), Takayama International Education Foundation, Kyoritsu International Foundation and Frances & Sachio Semmoto Foundation are a few examples received by our students in recent years.

JET Academy also has many moral/financial supporters ― alumni and friendly organizations, offering generous scholarships to our students with excellent grades so that these students could devote their time fully on studies.

――What about school dormitory?

We provide school dormitory with top facilities and easy access to the school. Total capacity is 14 students. All necessary furniture and electrical appliances are equipped so that you can start your life in Tokyo comfortably from the day you arrive in Japan.

――Are there any student discounts?

As full-time students, you could purchase commuter passes for JR, private railways and buses at a discounted rate. In addition, you are eligible for a 20% discount for trips of more than 100km one-way on JR. Student-discount tickets are also available for museums, theatres and many other places of attraction.
